And finally, the bills began to come! We felt we would not have to pay council tax as
international students and my spouse being a dependent of an international student. Eventually, we were given about 20% off the council tax and we still paid over £100 monthly.
Shortly after this was the electricity and gas bill. Way off our budget for recurring bills, £276. We
had to look for sustainable ways to live by reducing our bills. According to our findings earlier we
were asked to record the reading on the smart meter reader as soon as we get our new house.
Unfortunately, we recorded the wrong reading which was the daily ready and not the total at the time we moved in. The bill was revised since it was an estimated bill.
We turned off every of our home appliance and put them back on separately, we
discovered that the house heater and the water boilers were the major consumers of electricity
and gas.
We had to change our life style by getting duvets and warm clothes to warm ourselves
and not the house. We also discovered that we could install bubble wraps on all our glass doors
and window, this worked like magic! So we were able to also insulate the house as well. Hence
our heating system was put on intentional holiday/break.
As of the water boiler we substituted it for immersion ring boiler so we only need to warm the
amount of water we need to use per time. With these adjustments we got the electricity and gas
bill to about £140 on the average which was sustainable for us. She slideshow below.
